Let the March Madness begin!

Move your mouse over the dots to learn more about key games in the first few rounds of the tournament.

The annual March Madness tournament tipped off on March 18-19. The first round was played in Dayton: Albany v. Mount Saint Mary’s, North Carolina State vs. Xavier, Cal Poly vs. Texas So., and Iowa vs. Tennessee.

The bracket consists of four regions, South, East, West, and Midwest. The 64 teams who play in this tournament were decided on Sunday March 16.

The tournament will last three weeks with the Final Four on Saturday April 5 and the Championship game on Tuesday April 7.

There is always a Cinderella team, last year being “Dunk City” Florida Gulf Coast, the first team ranked 16 to make it as far as the Elite 8. They became well-known because of the dunks they did.

Warren Buffett, chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, said he would give $1 billion to the person who has a perfect bracket; however, this possibility has already been eliminated with the losses of teams like Duke and Syracuse.

Senior Matt Richards picks his bracket by looking at the teams who are coming in hot. He said, “[You have to] look our for the teams that always perform well in the tournament like Michigan State and UCONN.”

According to the website Businessinsider.com, the chances to have a perfect bracket is “1 in 9,223,372,036,854,775,808.”

Here is a look at a few games from the second and third rounds:

Dayton vs. Ohio State: Dayton “Flyers” pulled an upset over Ohio State 60-57. Dayton’s Vee Sanford secured the win with a layout with 3.8 seconds left. Ohio State’s Aaron Craft had a chance for a buzzer beater to win the game but his shot did not fall.  Dayton moved on to play Syracuse in the third round South Regional.

Harvard vs. Cincinnati: Harvard upset Cincinnati 61-57 in the East Regional second round.  This was Harvard’s first time in the NCAA Tournament since 1946.  Harvard proceeded to the next round against Michigan State.

Iowa State vs. North Carolina: Iowa State upset North Carolina, 85-83, with the winning basket at three seconds remaining.  North Carolina attempted to dribble the ball up court to call a timeout, but the referees determined that the time had expired due to a delay in starting the clock, ending their chance to advance.

Wichita State vs. Kentucky: Wichita State’s perfect season came to a heartbreaking end in the third round of the Midwest Regional falling to Kentucky 78-76.
