Senior Ellen Diehl and Junior Ozzy Smith laugh as they practice their royal dance for the CHS production of “Cinderella” as director Dan Schade looks on.

The classic and well-known fairy-tale, Cinderella, will be CHS’s spring musical this year.

This year’s production of Cinderella is based off the 2013 Broadway production, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella. The plot follows the original story with a few changes: Cinderella’s real name is Ella and Prince Charming is simply known as Topher (short for Christopher).

For the CHS production of the fairy tale musical, few things were added to make the story seem more realistic.

“The story remains the same but the script is different in a good way,” said set designer Doug Hewlett, “It talks about [real life] human experiences and the struggles we all face in life.”

Junior Fran Bixby became the student director after becoming interested in backstage work. As a student director, she faces challenges like making decisions by herself.

“You really feel the pressure even if its something small,” Bixby said. “The only way to over come it is to stick with your gut and know that there is a whole team of people supporting you.”

The main production staff of the musical have faced other challenges also.

“Student schedules are a challenge, with extracurricular activities an making sure that everyone is there,” choreographer Mrs. Kelley said.

Senior Ellen Diehl, who recently played Belle in Chambersburg Community Theater’s production of Beauty and the Beast, stars as the main role as Cinderella.

“It’s really exciting to be Cinderella,” said Diehl.  “It’s a really great show.”

CHS will present Cinderella in the McGowan Auditorium on March 2, 3, and 4 at 7 pm. New this year is a matinee performance on March 4 at 2 pm.
