The 2014 American Music Awards took place at the Staples Center in downtown LA, which marked the 41st anniversary of the award show.

The AMAs started off with Taylor Swift’s performance of her new single “Blank Space.” She acted a lot more loosely than usual during the performance, and there was a lot of fire being thrown around stage. As soon as Swift finished performing, Pitbull took the stage to present himself as host for the ceremony. The first award of the night was thankfully given to the talented boy band, One Direction.

There was an adorable moment when Jamie Foxx presented the award for “Rap/Hip-Hop Album” with his young daughter; Iggy Azalea won the AMA award. Soon after, Australian pop-rock band, Five Seconds Of Summer, rocked the stage with an 80’s hit “What I Like About You.” British singer Sam Smith won the award for “Pop/Rock Artist” and later performed his song “I’m Not the Only One” with a surprising collaboration with rapper A$AP Rocky.

Lorde viciously head-banged  throughout the whole performance of “Yellow Flicker Beat,” and Ariana Grande looked stunning as she sung her duet, “Love Me Harder” with The Weeknd. Also, One Direction won their second award of the night for “Pop/Rock Album.”

One of the most anticipated performances was the world premiere debut performance of Selena Gomez’s emotional Justin Bieber-inspired ballad “The Heart Wants What It Wants.” By the end of the song Selena was teary-eyed and mouthed, “Thank you Jesus”; even her BFF Taylor Swift started to get emotional (or she was fake crying…). After heavy anticipation from fans, One Direction took the stage and sung their new single “Night Changes,” and of course the British boys  were marvelous as always.

By the end of the ceremony, Diana Ross presented the Dick Clark’s Excellence Award to none other than Taylor Swift.

Jessie J, Ariana Grande, and Nikki Minaj brought major girl power performance of their hit song “Bang Bang.” The last award of the night was the most prestigious the “Artist Of The Year” award and the award went to *insert drumroll* ONE DIRECTION. After waiting for about two hours, everyone in America finally watched the sexy performance of JLo and Iggy Azalea’s song “Booty”; while the girls twerked it out, the performance was milder than most people imagined.
