SINGING FROM THE HEART: The band Lemon Limes audition for Coffeehouse: The Refill. The return of the traditional CHS showcase is just one of many artistic offerings being held in the weeks ahead at CHS.
Waiting for the spotlight: Highlighting the arts and music departments at CHS
A cutout of Frederick Douglass, a Black author and orator, standing tall, looking over Carlisle. Douglass stopped in town while on a speaking tour and within his speech, called out the racism within Carlisle and communities like Carlisle. While staying in town, Douglass’ hotel, the Bentz House Hotel (later the Worthington), told him that he was to eat his meals in his room rather than in the dining room where the white guests were staying. Douglass was correct to call out Carlisle, as restaurants banned people of color from walking through their front doors, providing a separate entrance. In what is known today as the Carlisle Theatre, people of color were banned to the balcony; separations of this nature continued in Carlisle well into the 1960s.

LIGHT READING: Mazie, resident dog of the McGeehan family poses all ready to dive into one of Thoreaus classics. Mazie has certainly enjoyed having us here at home. She has taken to laying in the guest bed, right next to where my husband and I work/Zoom every day. She snuggles right in and keeps us company all day long. I don’t think she’ll know what to do when we finally return to work – whenever that may be! Mazie has always been good therapy for us. She’s a sweet dog who loves to be loved, and being able to pet her and love her always brings me a sense of calm and comfort, said McGeehan.

Colton Gillingham

Colton Gillingham is a Carlisle High School freshman and this is his first year being a part of the Periscope staff. He is looking forward to experiencing what it is like contributing to a school newspaper and bringing his best efforts forward. Colton's free time typically consists of being around family and friends, as well as watching YouTube videos. Other hobbies of his are photography, listening to music, and volunteering at Carlisle Fire and Rescue Services. He looks forward to being a part of the Periscope staff and hopes he can return in the coming years.
