Clash of the patterns: Three looks to avoid

While we may want to stand out, the human eye naturally seeks out attractive visuals. Here are some fashion guidelines to consider to avoid those cringes and stares.

Take patterns for instance, such as plaids, polka dots, stripes and floral. Mixing these patterns can be the trick that sets you apart from all the rest, but it can also be the set-up to a fashion catastrophe.

Polka dots and stripes can be wonderful patterns to wear, but not together. Many people believe that in order to be different, they must be able to wear outfits that cause heads to turn, but do we want them to turn based on their lack of desire in our outfits?

Wearing patterns on opposite sides of the spectrum can clash. The outfit can become cluttered and instead of one main focal point of the outfit, there will be many. In this case, less is more: if we choose at least one pattern to be incorporated into our outfit, we won’t have an overly busy look.

Wearing all one color from top to bottom may not be one of the best choices to make either. The color blends together and we don’t get the diversity of the outfit. Your outfit should be broken into different colors; instead of pairing a red shirt with red pants and shoes, try pairing it with black bottoms or jeans.

This same rule should be applied to denim. Jeans should not be worn from head to toe unless you are wearing a jean jumper, and even that may be questionable. Jean shirts should be paired with solid-colored pants or in this case, patterned bottoms will be acceptable.

It is important that we are informed on what certain styles flatter us and what does not. Appropriately matching is key when it comes to certain clothing that we wear. If we don’t know what to wear together, we can create a fashion meltdown. Pair your clothing together responsibly so you won’t be the one who is negatively turning heads.
