Despite an impressive run, the girls volleyball team (seen here on their Play for Pink night) has ended the 2014 season at the district level.

Despite an impressive season, the varsity girls volleyball team will not be moving further in competition this year.

The team did advance to the District 3-AAA playoffs last week. They challenged Cocalico on Thursday Oct 23 and were victorious, so they moved on to a match against Hempfield, held on Sat Oct 25.

The Lady Herd had their hands full as they took on the top-ranked and undefeated Black Knights of Hempfield. The Herd fell in three sets of 25-13, 25-16, and 25-18.

Senior Allie Duffy had seven kills and one assist for the Herd, and junior Nicole Fuller had 17 assists and nine digs. Sophomore Cassidy Hoover contributed five kills to the stats.

The Hempfield game was expected to be a challenge. At a practice before the playoff matches, Coach Mike Beachy said, “We should be able to win on Thursday but a tough match against Hempfield on Saturday could provide for a very competitive match.”

JV also had a good season with a competitive spirit and a winning record.

Beachy said, “A couple of freshmen and sophomore players who played on JV and varsity provided a good mix of talent on the JV squad.”

Freshman Faith Renninger said that the season was successful on and off the court.

“The transition from middle school to high school went smoother, thanks to the older volleyball players” said Renninger.

Beachy added that “The success of the team had to do with strong relationships and hard work.”

Sophomore Elizabeth Young agreed with Beachy’s comment.

“The family atmosphere among the team has definitely given me more courage as a player and as a person,” said Young.

The varsity squad “had their ups and downs” according to Beachy. The Herd faced many challenging teams such as State College and Cumberland Valley. The team would finish with a 12-6 record in the regular season. After continuing to playoffs, the Herd finished with a 1-1 record, missing out on the competition for state champion.

Injuries and player changes allowed for inconsistency throughout the Varsity’s regular season. A graduating class of 6 seniors could lead to more inconsistency in the future.

However, Beachy is excited for the future by saying that there is “a lot of potential for next year due to skilled underclassmen.”
