Andee Orsini takes a practice swing at the ball during one of her matches. Orisini is one of five girls on the team this year.

The participation in girls’ golf is increasing, which allows them to have their own matches.

In 2008, 2010, and 2011, there was only one girl participating on the Carlisle girls golf team and in 2009 there were no girls on the team at all. For the 2014 season, there are five.

In 2012, the girls only had two matches where it was all girls competing. They now have 6-7 matches.

Senior Michaela McQuiag was the only girl her freshman year.

“I was intimidated being not only the new girl, but the only girl on the team as well,” said McQuiag.

Seniors Andee Orsini and Shannon Hestor joined the following two years, making it more of a team for McQuiag. They were able to go out, make t-shirts, and go on different trips together.  This year, they added senior Katie Dworak and sophomore Julianna Hughes to their fun.

“We look more like a team than the guys do half the time,” McQuiag joked.

Senior Andee Orsini had to travel with the boys to their matches her junior year.

“Playing with guys helped me learn to be competitive and helped me become a better golfer,” said Orisini.

This increase in participation is good for all female athletes.

“Girls are looking for sports that they can get involved in and have a chance to play in college,” said head coach Steve Wisner. “Hopefully, other girls in high school that are looking for a sport to play see the opportunities that are able to have by playing golf.”

Orsini, McQuiag, and Hestor will compete in Districts on Friday Oct 3 at Briarwood Golf Course in York.

Update 10/6 12:59pm: At Districts, Hestor finished in 18th place (90), McQuaig 21st (93) and Orisini 25th (97).
