This year, CHS will host a Quiz Bowl competition on Nov 17. PIctured here from left to right: Sophomore Harry Wendelkens, sophomore Sarah Ebert, junior Ben Ulrich, freshman Aidan Checkett.

The CHS Quiz Bowl team will be hosting a competition on Nov 17 in numerous classrooms of the McGowan building.

The team was the winner of the league last year.

“We’re the defending champions,” explained Dr. Margaret Jennings, one of the Quiz Bowl coaches along with being the high school ACT teacher.

Carlisle will face off against East Pennsboro and Boiling Springs. Additionally, the schools of Big Springs, Bishop McDevitt, Susquehanna, Susquenita, Northeastern, Trinity, Cumberland Valley, Central Dauphin East, Harrisburg Academy, Central Dauphin, and Shippensburg will compete.

Preparing an entire building to host a competition with fourteen teams requires teamwork.

According to sophomore Sarah Ebert, everyone “on the team gets a job to do, like welcoming teams, setting up the rooms, or setting up the buzzers.”

Ebert is optimistic and said she “[thinks] we’ll win, we’ve been having a good season so far.”

Quiz Bowl, a team-oriented fast paced academic competition, has benefited the school, specifically the library.

Cash prizes won by CHS Brainbusters members, a televised Quiz Bowl-like group that contains many of the Quiz Bowl members, have helped to purchase e-books in the high school library.

CHS librarian Capri Stiles said, “The Quiz Bowl and Brainbuster teams allow students to explore and compare their knowledge against other schools. I think that [their experiences] will also inspire [students] to gain more knowledge.”
