CHS wrestlers Donovan Glasser and Laton Schmick practice leading up to their competitions. The team this year has many more participants, so they are looking for an even more successful year then the last.

The Carlisle High School boys wrestling team is working extremely hard to have a good season, even though they felt as though they didn’t have as many players as they should.  This made it hard for them last season.

Working hard they finished up last season with 6 wins and 6 losses.  One of their most outstanding wins from the 2017 season is against West Perry with final scores 55-17.  They’re very proud of their last season and had several close matches.  There were also several matches that started off rough for them, but with determination, they came back to the top and stole the wins.

But going into this 2017-2018 season, many of them think that their weaknesses from last year will become improvements this year.  This year they have had more wrestlers come out and join the team then they have had in the last couple years.

In fact, senior Logan Huff said, “One of the biggest improvements from last year is the number of people that came out and tried wrestling.  They have really enjoyed it and are still wrestling.”

One of the things about sports teams that makes them special is that there is always room for improvement.  The Carlisle High School boys wrestling team has had many obstacles throughout the last couple seasons, but the boys are always looking for ways to improve.

Junior, Bryce Dunkelberger said, “We are just working hard this season and trying to get at least 1% better every day.”

Dunkelberger also agrees with Huff and thinks that one of their greatest improvements this year was that they have had a lot more boys come and try out for the team.

Dunkelberger said, “Our team has gotten bigger this year, unlike my freshman year when we didn’t even have a full lineup.”

Every wrestler has their own talents, and having more wrestlers on a team means that there is more talent that the team has as a whole.  This allows the team to be stronger as a whole.

Huff said, “With more numbers this year, we won’t give up too many points at a lot of weight classes.”

With a limited amount of wrestlers, they had to work with the weights that they had.  That sometimes meant losing some points in some parts of the matches.  Some of the other teams were stronger because they had a larger team and more weight classes that they could use.

The team has also learned to bond and work as a team.  Not only have they been working to improve individually, but also improving as a whole team.

Junior Seth Bloomquist said, “We have more wrestlers this year and are working a lot harder as a whole”.

Freshman Jake Curtis who is new to the team this year opens up about why he decided to try out for the wrestling team.

Curtis said, “I wanted to try a different and some of my friends wrestled so I thought I would give it a try.  It was also an opportunity to meet new people and I have been able to make new friends from all different grades.”

So far they have done well this season, with a close match against Mifflin, a winning score against State College of 45-27, and a very impressive win against Harrisburg, 61-15.  Their record right now is 2-3, and they are focused, determined, and ready to finish the season strong.
