Overflowing with Talent: Coffeehouse returns for First Cup
Over this past weekend, scores of teachers, students and parents from the CHS community came together for an extraordinary night of music, food, poetry and all around good times. This was the first Coffeehous of the year- the First Cup. And rest assured, it was a generous refill for our cups which have been left high and dry since last year.
According to CHS English teacher Mrs. Susan Biondo-Hench (one of the founders and advisers/managers of the event), Coffeehouse has been happening starting in 2010, and has been going strong every year since. Coffeehouse holds multiple events per year, where student musicians and poets are allowed to exhibit their talents.

According to Biondo-Hench, the idea came about in the midst of one of her Shakespeare Page-to-Stage meetings (Hench is also the Shakespeare adviser). It occurred to her just how much student talent there was in the school – and more importantly, how it needed an outlet. And thus, the Coffeehouse was born, and it has been entertaining us ever since.
This year is no different. An extremely talented ensemble of student and teacher musicians and poets performed their hearts out in the Courtyard Cafe.
When asked why she and others keep coming back to Coffeehouse, volunteer and student Mayce Van said, “Good music, good food, and good people.”
The entertainers made returns for similar reasons- according to the Geo Environmental science teacher and musician Bruce Rowland,:”It’s such an honor to be up up there.”
Similar sentiments were shared by first time performer, Kevin Spicer, also a Geo Environmental teacher, who was “blown away by the level of student talent present.”
The audience found it to be an incredible experience, where one may see entire sides of their teachers and classmates they never knew existed.
But don’t lament if you missed it- there will be multiple Coffeehouses throughout the year for you to watch the incredible talent of CHS.

This article is a really great summary and representation of Coffeehouse because it’s simple. Just like the event, it’s nothing that’s a big deal…it’s just music and a great time. As one of the most professional yet low-pressure events conducted at the high school, I find it impossible not to be drawn to participating and encouraging others to attend and do the same.
