The following article contains major spoilers.
Lights, Camera, Action! Millie Bobby Brown is back on the screen, this time in a movie called The Electric State. Brown stars alongside Chris Pratt (Jurassic Park, Guardians of the Galaxy) as Michelle Greene and John D. Keats, respectively.
Michelle Greene is a teenager in an alternate reality of the 1990s with her brother, Christopher (Woody Norman). In the early points of the movie, robots are considered normal in the workforce, however, humans are having a tough time keeping them under control. The robots eventually start an uprising and go to war with humans, destroying the futuristic world and leaving many buildings and cities in complete ruin. In this uprising, Christopher, who was a child prodigy, disappears, leaving Michelle panicked. Christopher had created a robot dog, named Cosmo, and together, Michelle and Cosmo left in search of Christopher.
Christopher is believed to be held captive by the Sentre. The Sentre is a science headquarters that is run by CEO Ethan Skate (Stanley Tucci). The scientist who is behind this headquarters is Dr. Clark Amherst (Ke Huy Quan). Michelle is determined to get Christopher back and will do whatever it takes. On the difficult journey, a drifter named John Keats agrees to help both Michelle and Cosmo. During the trip, the three encounter ruins from one flourishing consumerist nation. It has sort of an eerie feeling to it since there is really nobody left in the town except for robots and people who are under robot control.
Michelle, Cosmo, and Keats eventually reach the Sentre Headquarters and launch an attack. In due time, they reach Christopher, where he is displayed as a sort of brain controlling the world and the Headquarters. It is a very emotional scene, but Christopher requests that they unplug his life support so the headquarters can finally be shut down. Reluctantly, Michelle does agree, but not before she promises to build a world where humans and robots can live happily together again. In the final shots of the movie, Cosmo is seen as possibly surviving. This would be considered a twist because Christopher and Cosmo should have been linked together, meaning that when Christopher died, Cosmo should have too, so this could mean a possible sequel.
The cinematography of this movie, as well as the CGI, was incredible. The movie was very, very loosely based on the novel by Simon Stalenhag. His book was about a dystopian alternate reality with high technology during the 90s. This book came out in 2018. The directors of the movie did comment and explain that The Electric State was not a direct adaptation and had very major differences from the book.
Released on March 14th, 2025, the movie explores different themes of human connection, family, and the consequences of a world that relies on new, futuristic technology. Overall, the movie was not awful by any means, but this could be due to the bias of liking the main characters and actors. Other than that, the overall response to the movie has been extremely negative.
The movie has an overall audience rating of four stars. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie has a 15% rating, which really is not a great score to have. On IMDb, the movie had a rating of 5.9/10 which is also not the most amazing score. Finally, the rating of the movie on Screen Rant was 4/10. Critics on Rotten Tomatoes have been saying that the movie has an overall uncomfortable and eerie feeling to it, with some critics calling it a major flop.
