CVA

CVA

Dr. Buffington  was interviewed by Periscope Staffer Alex Landis regarding CVA enrichment courses. Enrichment courses are courses that could be taken during the regular school day, but students have the option to to take them online to fulfill graduation requirements while freeing up schedule space to explore other in person options.

‘Scope: Is there an additional cost for CVA enrichment courses like Gym, Health, Safety Ed and Financial Literacy?
“Great question. For the 2023-2024 there is a cost for an enrichment course. Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic we always had the cost… we as a district wiped that for COVID to try and help out and get people where they needed to, but due to budget and other things we needed to get back to where we were pre-COVID and that’s why the cost is going back in.”

‘Scope: What is the cost for CVA courses?
“600 dollars for a class.  Now when I say class, keep in mind its basically $300 per semester, so if you took PE and Safety ed, that’s $300 for each one of them. If you took [a year-long class like] Algebra that $600 for the entire year.”

‘Scope: Why did they choose to start charging that?
“The key thing is district office is trying to get everything back to where we need to. Because of budget… we need to get back to certain things costing money. For a student to take a class in person or  virtually there is a cost to the district… so we’re going back to the fact that pre-COVID we had a cost.”

‘Scope: Will there be any accommodations for students with financial hardships?
“On our application we do have a note at the bottom that administration will look at if there are families that have free lunch or anything of that sort. If a family reaches out and says ‘hey, this is going on’ we’ll work with families.”

‘Scope: Anything you’d like to add?
“A lot of students are concerned with the change, and truthfully the change was that we made it all free originally, now were going back to where we were when we started. CVA and [other pieces] are going  back to the way things were, which is truthfully where we want everything. We want it all to go back to normal. We’re not trying to cause anybody extra hardships and we’re willing work with people. We just want to provide education for all but also hold everybody accountable in all pieces.”
