Carlisle High School’s Construction program is building the new Project Share farm stand building. Since the students in this class are going to do this as a living, being able to actually work on a real building is a worthwhile experience for them.

Sean Allewelt is the teacher in charge of the class. He goes with the students to the building site. Also the class has an aide, James Vander Wiel, that helps and goes with them; he helps the students with anything that they need.

Allewelt actually volunteered the students for the construction project.

“I think it is a great cause and a great opportunity for my students to learn to build something new,” said Allewelt.

The Project Share Farm Stand is the new building that is run by neighbors and people in the community.  They give out nutritious foods and bread two-three times a week.

On a daily basis (except for days that are too cold or start on a two hour delay), they go over to the site, located at 404 N. Pitt Street, with a van. They have to take two trips because there are so many students. Also, Allewelt puts a trailer on the back of the van to bring them all of the tools that they need.

The students go right at the beginning of fifth period and come back towards the end of seventh, spending about three periods building this new place for Project Share.

Junior Bryce Whitten said, “I enjoy going over to the Project Share building when we go because it gives me some experience with construction.”

Most of the students in construction think it is a great way to help the community and gain experience in real life.

Junior Brady Schlusser said, “We are used to building sheds and now [it’s like] we are building a house so it is much better than the sheds; it is a step up.”
