Once you are in, you can’t get out.

There has been an increasingly more unoriginal and is playing out old ideas more and more. This isn’t a criticism of Hollywood; it’s a praise for finding a diamond in the rough. Get Out is truly a gem.

The plot seems like it would be from a movie everyone has watched a million times. The main character is introduced to a new place with people they don’t know. Something is wrong, the lead sees it, and nobody else seems to understand.

However, Get Out has this suspense and mystery which is unconventional but it pays off. Christopher Washington (Daniel Kaluuya) is a very real character. His reaction to the behavior around him is very realistic and how a normal person would act, breaking the mold of many horror movies.

The movie follows Washington and his girlfriend Rose (Allison Williams) as they go to her family’s neighborhood for a visit. It doesn’t take long for Chris to notice there is something… off. Events unfold and he won’t rest until he figures out what is going on or escapes.

The performances from all the cast as a whole is very well done and for actors that didn’t get their part based on popularity, I didn’t recognize many of them.

There was a lot of talk about the underlying theme of racism in the movie. This is more in the eye of the beholder; some say that they are reading too much into it and others say that it’s very obvious. From what I saw, there was definitely themes of it but they weren’t beating you over the head with it either.

Cinematography was well done too.  The shots taken and the atmosphere that was created was creepy and mysterious.

No movie is perfect, however. There were unnecessary moments where they try to jump scare the audience and it took away the authenticity of the movie. It doesn’t have to resort to cheap tricks to add the scare factor that already exists.

The climatic twist is a little predictable for avid movie goers; it still works but I was able to see it coming 10 minutes prior to it actually happening. I will say that the ending was the most satisfying ending I’ve ever seen.

Overall, I thought that the movie was very well done and different. Highly recommend seeing it, 4/5 stars and 8.5/10
